I have Mondays off

If you couldn't tell, I don't work on Mondays. Tuesday through Saturday is the schedule I've been keeping for the last 9 months or so and it works out quite well. Well, except when I'm too tired to move on a Saturday night. Then it sucks. Aside from that, great.

This weekend was pretty awesome, even if Judith took off on Saturday. I was going to head to see the Swingin Utters on Sunday, but alas, they canceled. So instead, I got breakfast at Kate's with Erin and Will and got some new sandles. It's freaking amazing weather right now in SF. If anyone wants to visit, now would be the time, before the Fog Of Death® rolls in for the summer. However, something hilariously terrible did happen last night.

As I was coming out of REI with my newly purchased sandals, Rachel (aka Friendster) called me up and asked me to see a play. Awesome. However, about 15 minutes later, she calls back up, leaves a panicked message, and says she has broken out in hives. Apparently she might have gotten a bugbite and been allergic to it. Who knows? I guess the bottom line is that the very thought of a night with me is enough to give a girl hives. Scarred for life.

Time to be productive, or just take more pictures of flowers with my cell phone.

Slashdot | Censored Nagasaki Bomb Story Found:

In 1945 journalist George Weller snuck past the American occupying forces and became the first American Journalist to see the devastation left by the atomic bomb that fell on Nagasaki. His story infuriated MacArthur, who had it quashed.

Pretty awesome. From the story:
Showing them to you, as the first American outsider to reach Nagasaki since the surrender, your propaganda-conscious official guide looks meaningfully in your face and wants to knew: "What do you think?"

What this question means is: do you intend saying that America did something inhuman in loosing this weapon against Japan? That is what we want you to write.

Several children, some burned and others unburned but with patches of hair falling out, are sitting with their mothers. Yesterday Japanese photographers took many pictures with them. About one in five is heavily bandaged, but none of showing signs of pain.

Some adults are in pain as they lie on mats. They moan softly. One woman caring for her husband, shows eyes dim with tears. It is a piteous scene and your official guide studies your face covertly to see if you are moved.

In a word: Awesome
In two words: Friggin Awesome
In three words: BEST MOVIE EVER

Seriously, this is the best Batman movie ever, and easily one of my favorite movies. It puts Episode 3 to shame, and honestly had better character development than the majority of movies coming out these days, even from the "made for Oscar" crowd like that movie about the high dollar baby.
I usually don't do this, but it's NPR.

From the ever-obnoxious MoveOn.orgYou know that email petition that keeps circulating about how Congress is slashing funding for NPR and PBS? Well, now it's actually true. (Really. Check the footnotes if you don't believe us.)
A House panel has voted to eliminate all public funding for NPR and PBS, starting with "Sesame Street," "Reading Rainbow," and other commercial-free children's shows. If approved, this would be the most severe cut in the history of public broadcasting, threatening to pull the plug on Big Bird, Cookie Monster and Oscar the Grouch.
Sign the petition telling Congress to save NPR and PBS

If we can reach 250,000 signatures by the end of the week, we'll put Congress on notice. After you sign the petition, please pass this message along to any friends, neighbors or co-workers who count on NPR and PBS.
The cuts would slash 25% of the federal funding this year—$100 million—and end funding altogether within two years.1 In particular, the loss could kill beloved children's shows like "Sesame Street," "Clifford the Big Red Dog," "Arthur" and "Postcards from Buster." Rural stations and those serving low-income communities might not survive. Other stations would have to increase corporate sponsorships.

Treehugger: SF Expected To Go With Green Purchasing:

In an effort to reduce pollution and environmental toxins, San Francisco could become the first city in the nation to favor "green" products in purchases from window cleaner to electricity to playground equipment. The philosophy, known as the "precautionary principle," is a response to the growing incidence of disease some health experts attribute to pollution and environmental toxins. For instance, a 2004 report from the Breast Cancer Fund found that scientific evidence shows some 85,000 synthetic chemicals are contributing to breast cancer by altering hormone or gene function.

This looks pretty awesome. The idea that the Precautionary Principle would be on the books somewhere makes me want to stay here a bit longer than I though.
